Coastal Zone Management in the Arabian Gulf

This project is a collaborative effort with Nakheel, a subsidiary of Dubai World and creator of the large off-shore residential developments Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, The World, Dubai Waterfront and Palm Deira now being constructed along the Dubai coast.

Project Objectives

Our primary goal is to design and implement a long-term environmental monitoring program and sustainable management plan for marine waters surrounding these large-scale developments. To do so requires a program of ecological/environmental research to understand the nature of these newly developed ecosystems and how they respond to weather and other environmental variables.

Dissemination of Knowledge at Local, Regional and International levels

This project will serve as a platform for capacity building in specific aspects of coastal marine management in the UAE, the wider Gulf region, and the international community. We plan to conduct a series of training workshops on relevant topics, initiate collaborative research with members of the regional academic community, hold a series of triennial-international scientific conferences as well as provide long-term mentoring of Nakheel and affiliated personnel. In this way we share experience gained in Dubai waters and promulgate best practice for environmental sustainability in the face of major off-shore construction projects.

Project Activities

The agreement was formally signed in January 2007. During its first six months, UNU-INWEH recruited a small Dubai-based team to be housed within the Nakheel Environment Department. They are supported by a North American-based team including Principal Investigators from three Universities. A 4-5 year research and monitoring program has been planned, and needed equipment is being secured. Initial activities include staff training, establishment of a marine environmental laboratory, basic research studies to document the ecology of the ecosystems being developed, and provision of predictive management tools.

As part of this program UNU-INWEH will carry out a series of services and studies to produce the necessary data and information exchange which will in turn contribute to the sustainable management of NMPs.

Four Programme Components:

1) Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP)

2) Assessment of marine habitats and biological characteristics across Nakheel Marine Projects

3) Detailed water quality study, and model of temperature/salinity/oxygen response

4) Capacity-building opportunities including the “Palm Conference Series”

The Environmental Monitoring Program commenced in 2007. The projects primary monitoring and research is Palm Jumeirah, with limited monitoring at Palm Jebel Ali, and at natural reefs nearby. An offshore monitoring site 15km northwest of Palm Jumeirah was established and instrumented. In addition to research and monitoring in the immediate vicinity of Nakheel developments, the project has conducted survey research to understand the natural ecology of the Gulf, and to compare it to the waters of the eastern U.A.E. and Oman. This improves our ability to detect, and to understand any environmental changes due to the presence of Nakheel developments.
