Dr. Geórgenes Cavalcante
Research Associate, Coastal Programme

 

Dr. Geórgenes Cavalcante, from the coast of Brazil, brings more than eleven years of experience in marine environmental studies to UNU-INWEH. His research interests are coastal processes, estuaries, and ocean-atmosphere interaction. He is responsible for the oceanographic component of an interdisciplinary research project for the marine water developments along the coast of Dubai. Before joining UNU, he spent eighteen months as an Exchange Visitor Scholar at Texas A&M University in the U.S., working primarily on oceanographic data analysis for his doctoral dissertation. He obtained a PhD in Environmental Geochemistry at Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil. He studied the main physical processes in the Brazilian coastal area of Pará and estuarine dynamics of the Caeté River. He taught courses in descriptive oceanography and physical meteorology at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL), Brazil, from where he also earned a Masters in Meteorology under the guidance of Dr. Arno Maschmann de Oliveira. Dr. Cavalcante has extensive experience working on interdisciplinary and collaborative projects funded by multiple government and NGO agencies, such as Agência Nacional de Água, Global Environment Facilities (GEF), and the Organization of American States (OAS).
