2008 - International Year of Sanitation

International Workshop
Sanitation: Innovations for Policy and Finance
20-21 October 2008, Hamilton, Canada

This workshop is a unique opportunity to bring together international expertise to discuss key policy questions related to the International Year of Sanitation (2008). The workshop focuses on sanitation within the broader context of both human and ecosystem health and wellbeing. Specifically, the workshop will examine innovations in both policy and finance for women and children in rural, remote and otherwise marginalized communities. Invitees to the workshop bring novel ideas to undertake the following:

Identify solutions to the practical challenges in shaping up of appropriate policies and mobilizing adequate finances.

Influence uptake of those solutions into policy formulation processes.

Contribute to research and dialogue within the context of an informal network.

It is anticipated that the discussions will lead to guidance and insights for changing policy perspectives and mobilizing financial resources. Recommendations from the workshop will be encapsulated in a policy brief, in addition to published proceedings. The dialogue will directly benefit from and summarize findings developed and published by other IYS events and activities. Further, it will be the starting point of an informal network that brings together local community representatives, NGOs, policy-makers and researchers involved with water and sanitation issues.Contact person: Dr. Corinne Wallace

Art Exhibit
Sanitation is Dignity
15 October -1 November 2008, McMaster Museum of Art, Hamilton

UNU-INWEH and McMaster University present the German Toilet Organization (GTO) Exhibition, Sanitation is Dignity, highlighting the importance of sanitation in 2008, the United Nations International Year of Sanitation (IYS). The art exhibit is a global initiative of GTO supported by UN-Water.

We can imagine hunger or thirst, but what would it be like to live without toilets? Few are aware that this scenario is everyday reality for over 41% of the world’s population. The GTO created the Sanitation is Dignity exhibition to break the taboo associated with this neglected topic.

The exhibition shows life-size, standup illustrations of people defecating in public, as they try to hide behind objects to maintain some privacy and dignity. Where would you hide? they ask.
