Training and Workshops in
the UNU-INWEH Connectivity Project
The Connectivity Project features capacity building activities through a
series of annual training workshops for working group staff, symposia within key
international technical conferences, and regional information workshops
for senior management agency and NGO personnel.
Connectivity & protected Area Management on the
Mesoamerican Reef Workshop – Lessons to date, July
12-13, 2008

The workshop was attended by 43 participants including
members of the Connectivity Working Group, Coral Reef Targeted Research
Project (CRTR), graduate students supported by or working on the
project, reef managers, and local NGO personnel from the Mesoamerican
region. The Workshop was held from 12-13 July 2008 at the Broward County
Convention Center, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

Fourth Training Workshop on Connectivity, Recruitment,
and Protected Area Management for the Mesoamerican Reef, April 25-27,
2007
The
fourth training workshop was held at
Anthony’s Key Resort Roatan, Honduras. This workshop was slightly different from the three prior training workshops
in that it was broader in focus and aimed more at using monitoring data
in management and was attended by a combination of managers and NGO
personnel as well as members of the Connectivity program. It was
attended by 18 participants from the region.

Third Training Workshop on Recruitment Monitoring Mexico,
April 3-7, 2006
The
third training workshop on recruitment monitoring was conducted at
Centro Ecologico Akumal,
Akumal, Mexico, for 16 participants and focused on recruitment
monitoring, including additional techniques and methods for data
handling and evaluation.

Annual Working Group Meeting in Miami,
September 17-21, 2006
This
three-day workshop on
Connectivity of Mesoamerican Reefs was held at the Rosenstiel School of
Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, with support from The
Nature Conservancy and
Environmental Defense. It brought together 35 working group members, associate members
and associated students, and 15 management agency and NGO personnel from
the Mesoamerican region. The first half of meeting was used to assess progress and
plan
activities for future years, while the second half, with managers
and NGO personnel present, was used to share results, discover managers
needs, and build partnerships and support for
the project.

Annual Working Group meeting in
Belize, March 3-6, 2005
A working group meeting was held
at the University of B
elize field site at
Calabash Caye, Turneffe Atoll. This provided a valuable opportunity to
review the Connectivity program, and for several participants, to do
preliminary site exploration near Calabash, and in pre- or post-meeting
visits elsewhere in the region. All but 3 WG members were able to
attend.

Second Recruitment
Monitoring Workshop, June 16 to 21, 2005
The
second training workshop was held at the University of Belize, Institute
for Marine Studies field station at Calabash Caye, Turneffe Islands
Atoll, Belize. 16 participants attended this workshop. This workshop
focused primarily on in-water skills and cross validating census
techniques.

First Training Workshop Mexico,
Nov 29 to Dec 4, 2004
The
first training
workshop was held at
Centro Ecologico Akumal,
Akumal, Mexico for 26 participants from management agencies and
environmental NGOs with monitoring/management responsibilities in
Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.
