Joint International Conference
Desertification and the International
Policy Imperative
17-19
December 2006, Algiers
Conference Objectives
The conference aims primarily to facilitate a dialogue on
desertification-related policy issues, and to do so in the
context of global human development challenges, notably
poverty reduction and threatened human security.
Specifically, the conference will focus on the following
objectives:
- Identify key policy challenges for combating
desertification, based on an in-depth analysis of national
and international strategies;
- Discuss and explore avenues for mainstreaming
desertification issues at various levels, leading to
improved policy focus on droughts and desertification in
the short term, and increased well-being of the dryland
dwellers in the long term;
- Elaborate the role of knowledge management for
sustainable land management in policy formulation, with
particular attention given to scientific and traditional
knowledge;
- Explore the interaction of national strategies to
combat desertification with broader national development
strategies, with a particular focus on the global
challenges faced in meeting the MDG’s;
- Evaluate synergies and interlinkages at local,
national and international levels in the implementation of
various multilateral environmental agreements.
