Session 1 - Policy challenges in combating desertification
Focused on:
Interactions between desertification, poverty and threats to human security
Assessing the costs of inaction and the full value of ecosystem services secured by sustainable land management
Geographical and institutional scales of challenges

Session 2 - New directions to mainstream desertification policies
Focused on:

New financing and development options
Policies to enable alternative livelihoods
The potential role of the private sector
Development and aid policies to combat desertification and improve drought preparedness

Day 2 - Monday, 18 December 2006
Sessions 3 - National case studies
Focused on:

Involvement of a broad range of national stakeholders in formulation and implementation of NAPs and other related approaches
Mainstreaming combating desertification into national development strategies
Cases of policy disconnects, and contributions from different isolated sectors or levels

Sessions 4 - Regional case studies

Day 3 - Tuesday, 19 December 2006
Session 5 - Knowledge management for action on desertification
Focused on:

Gaps in scientific knowledge and exchange of experiences
Approaches for effective knowledge management and links to policy formulation
Policies to support the role of traditional knowledge and adaptive management
Approaches to improve communication with policymakers

Session 6 - Interlinkages between desertification, climate change and other global environmental issues
Focused on:

Operational linkages between NAPs, NAPAs and NIPIs
Contributions to combating desertification by climate-change focused initiatives
Knowledge networks within and between MEA stakeholder communities
